Walking becomes a habit, a fact of life, a pleasure when you have access to enjoyable walks - interesting that this was recognised and implemented at a societal or community level in Nagano - I think that is a big difference between the cultures.

A similar thing has been seen in Manchester, UK where they have made a point of linking together existing routes and where people live for walking and biking so that people are not cut off / isolated by major highways.

Making cities more walking friendly is a positive way forward, and may be one good thing to come out of the pandemic / lockdowns.
